Letter: Why did U.S. start military exercises with S. Korea just before summit with N. Korea?

This week South Korea and the U.S. began two week of military exercises with 100 warplanes — a hostile act that breaks the new agreement between North and South Korea.

Aim of U.S. in S. Korea
summit questionable

Re: “North Korea threatens to cancel summit” (Page A5, May 16):

Last month North Korea and South Korea declared that there would be no more war on the Korean Peninsula and a new era of peace has begun. They agreed to joint efforts to alleviate the acute military tension, agreed to completely cease all hostile acts against each other in every domain as of May 1.

This week South Korea and the U.S. began two week of military exercises with 100 warplanes. This was a hostile act, breaking the agreement.

One has to wonder why they are provoking North Korea and sabotaging the submit. It appears that the U.S. never intended to have a summit and therefore, peace is not the priority.
