Tuesday, May 22, will be the last day for Walnut Creek fans of the Panera Bread at Plaza Escuela to get their salad, soup, sandwich and baked-good fix.

The eatery on Locust Street is shutting down.

A posted sign says: “We appreciate the support of the community and thank all of our loyal customers for their business over the years.”

No reason was given for the closing, and the management referred questions to the Panera Bread corporate office in St. Louis, which oversees the chain’s 2,000 bakery-cafes.

This restaurant will open at its usual 6 a.m. time Tuesday but likely will close early, the staff said.

Customers are encouraged to patronize other Panera Bread restaurants located in Walnut Creek (Bancroft), Concord (the Willows), Alamo (Alamo Plaza) and San Ramon (Crow Canyon Place).
