ANTIOCH — A resident was in county jail after a foot chase led to his arrest on a warrant as well as suspicion of auto-theft charges, authorities said.
Just before 8:45 a.m. Monday, an officer found a vehicle that had been reported stolen parked at an apartment complex near Cavallo Road and East 18th Street, police said.
When the officer approached the vehicle, its driver got out and ran through the complex toward a nearby field before entering a local business.
Police soon realized the driver had not left the business and was hiding on its roof. After officers set up a perimeter, one officer found a loaded handgun in the stolen car, police said.
But a witness told police they thought the man, identified as Dupree Straughter, 34, may have had an object that could have been a weapon in his hand. Officers then cleared out the business, and managed soon after to get a view of Straughter atop the roof.
Moments later, Straughter surrendered to police, climbing down and being taken into custody. No weapons were found on him or on the roof, police said.
He was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm, possession of stolen property, auto theft, resisting arrest, possession of a concealed weapon and carrying a loaded firearm.
Straughter was due to be booked into Martinez county jail on the charges, as well as a warrant for pobation violation, and was held in lieu of $190,000 bail, according to a county records check.
