SAN JOSE — A 19-year-old man has been identified as the person killed in a stabbing at a busy East San Jose shopping plaza Sunday evening, according to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
The attack was reported at 7:47 p.m. outside the Target at Capitol Square Mall at North Capitol Avenue, according to San Jose police. Officers found a gravely injured man who was rushed to a local hospital, where he died.
He was identified by the coroner’s office Tuesday as Anthony Vasquez, a San Jose resident.
No suspects had been arrested or publicly identified as of Tuesday morning, and the motive and circumstances behind the death are still being investigated. But witness accounts later relayed to police indicate that there was a brief fight before the victim ran off toward a back lot and collapsed a short time later.
The death marked the city’s 42nd homicide of the year. There were 34 homicides in all of 2019 in San Jose, which is currently on pace to record 45 homicides in 2020, which would approach the 25-year high of 47 in 2016.
