OAKLAND – A man riding a bicycle was hit and killed late Friday on an Oakland freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.

The collision was reported at 10 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 580, just west of MacArthur Boulevard, the CHP said in a news release. Officers arrived to find the man lying in the roadway.

An initial investigation revealed the man was riding a bicycle in the second lane from the left when he was hit by a vehicle, the CHP said. A second vehicle then hit the man.

According to witnesses, the man was traveling westbound in eastbound lanes “in complete darkness, while wearing dark clothing,” the CHP said.

Eastbound I-580 was closed until about 11:40 p.m. as a result of the crash and subsequent investigation.

The CHP said it was not known if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office will release the man’s identity once it has been confirmed and his next of kin is notified.

Anyone with information related to the case can contact the CHP tip line at 800-TELL-CHP or the Oakland CHP area office at 510-457-2875.
