Why is it called Black Friday? All about the holiday's origins

The Encyclopedia Britannica suggests that the term for the shopping holiday originated in Philadelphia in the 1960s. It was during this time that Philadelphia police started calling the day between Thanksgiving and the city's annual Army-Navy football game "Black Friday" due to the challenges they faced, including heavy traffic, unfavorable weather conditions and large crowds of people.

In the 1980s, experts say merchants tried to reclaim the term "Black Friday," aligning it with the concept that businesses are "in the red," (bad) until the day after Thanksgiving, when big sales events help them turn a profit, or put them "in the black" (good).

Whatever the reason for the moniker, the shopping holiday is now synonymous with the best deals of the year on home, tech, fitness, beauty, toys and so much more.

When do Cyber Monday deals start in 2023?

After Black Friday comes Cyber Monday. The two shopping holidays have become more synonymous in recent years as many Black Friday deals are available online as well. Cyber Monday 2023 is on Nov. 27.
