A man suspected of stabbing three people in East San Jose early Wednesday died later in the morning when he was hit by a truck while walking on Highway 85 near Cupertino, authorities said.
The stabbing was reported at 2:09 a.m. at a home Tehama Avenue near Reid-Hillview Airport, according to San Jose police. Three people, all adults, were injured in the attack that was reportedly committed by a man who lived with them at the home.
The man sought in the attack reportedly fled in a vehicle and was not located until 4:48 a.m., when the California Highway Patrol responded to a collision involving a pedestrian on northbound Highway 85 north of De Anza Boulevard. Officer Ross Lee said CHP units arrived to find that a person — later determined to have been behind the stabbing — was on foot in one of the left lanes when a truck hit him.
Lee said the driver told officers that the man jumped in front of his truck before the collision occurred. The entire northbound direction of the freeway surrounding the collision site was shut down for several hours while the CHP examined the scene.
A Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputy said the man’s car was found in West San Jose not far from where he died, SJPD spokesman Sgt. Christian Camarillo said. The man’s name has not been publicly released pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin by the county Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
An investigation into the stabbing is underway, and a motive for the attack was unclear, Camarillo said. Officers were seeking an arrest warrant for the man when they found out he had been hit on the freeway.
