Police are looking for witnesses and potential victims after a man allegedly attacked several strangers in Vancouver’s Gastown neighbourhood Monday night, before brandishing a weapon and being shot by responding officers.

Several witnesses called 911 about the assaults near Abbott Street and West Cordova Street just before 10 p.m.

They told police a man “slapped a woman, assaulted a cyclist, then tried to attack someone who was walking amongst a group of people outside Nester’s Market,” said VPD spokesman Sgt. Steve Addison in an update on Tuesday.

“He also allegedly tried to start a fight near the Metropole Pub and brandished a weapon before being confronted by police.”

VPD and Transit Police officers spotted a suspect walking on Cambie Street who confronted them.

The suspect was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds, said Addison, and the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is investigating the police-involved shooting. No officers were injured.

VPD’s major crimes section is investigating the alleged attacks before police arrived, and is asking anyone who saw the incidents or was a victim to call 604-717-2541.
