U.S. man who tried to smuggle ‘ghost gun’ into B.C. sentenced

A U.S. man has pleaded guilty to trying to smuggle a “ghost gun” into Canada through a B.C border crossing.

On March 21, California resident Jerry Armas admitted in Surrey provincial court to possessing and attempting to smuggle a loaded, prohibited handgun into Canada.

He was charged after he tried to enter the country at the Peace Arch crossing in March 2023. After a vehicle examination, border officers found more than 18 grams of cocaine and a privately-made, unserialized 9mm ghost gun and 118 rounds of ammunition.

Richmond RCMP investigating alleged assault on senior

Richmond RCMP is looking for a woman who allegedly assaulted an elderly woman at a store in Richmond in March.

An 88-year-old was inside a store in the 9200-block Alderbridge Way at around 4:30 p.m. on March 5 when a woman approached her and allegedly hit her on the head, said police.

No one witnessed the incident. A relative of the victim reported it to police the next day.

“The victim was struck hard enough that she fell onto the floor but fortunately, she did not sustain any physical injuries,” said Richmond RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Adriana O’Malley.

The motive for the attack is not known.

Police released images of the woman Friday in the hopes someone would recognize the suspect and contact police.

The photos show a heavy-set woman with brown hair wearing a blue T-shirt, dark blue shorts, flip-flops and glasses.
